Toronto has been called the Raccoon capital of the world and it’s easy to see why. These pesky nocturnal animals are well adapted to urban life, and are very resourceful when it comes to building a home and finding food. They will make homes underneath porches or in the attics of homes, and will feast on vegetables from neighbourhood gardens or food scraps from green bins. They can be such a nuisance that a recent poll shows 53% of Torontonians would support euthanizing raccoons to control the population.
The city has a useful fact sheet for how to deal with raccoons that includes useful tips like spraying your garden vegetables with a hot pepper spray to keep the raccoons from eating them, or annoying them by playing talk radio at a loud volume.
What has your experience been with the Raccoons in this neighbourhood? How do you deal with keeping them out of your gardens, attics, and garbages? Let us know in the comments!
